Nature and Scope

The Medical Records Technician is responsible for the maintenance, storage, and processing of all medical records and EHR data for both hospital and clinics. This involves performing a variety of clerical and technical duties associated with the management and oversight of medical records including, but not limited to: assembling, analysis, release of information, subpoena processing, scanning records, answering phones, completing birth certificates, data processing, collection and reconciliation in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements. Additional Patient Access training will be required, which includes, but is not limited to answering and directing incoming phone calls, directing patients who present to the hospital lobby and outpatient registration coverage. Must be able to work independently and have the ability to interact and communicate both verbally and in writing with patients, the public and other PDH departments.

Compensation

Compensation Philosophy:

  • We have 6 pay increments on our clinical pay scales to compensate successful candidate for 6 years of relevant experience

Compensation Range:

  • $19.16 - $24.46 / hour

Qualifications

Experience: 

  • Preferred: Experience in the medical field and familiarity with medical terminology.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Excellent reading and writing skills and good verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and strict adherence to the hospital confidentiality policies.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the medical staff and hospital personnel.
  • Typing, computer skills and 10-key preferred.
  • Must be able to work well with others and work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains medical records operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.
  • Follows procedures for scanning documents, removes difficult to scan documents, and checks patient record for poor quality.
  • Ensures scanning equipment is in optimal working condition. Scans documents, reviews images and verifies quality.
  • Interviews mothers for birth certificate information and enters information into electronic birth certificate system. Sends completed birth certificates to county and processes fetal death certificates, responds to customer inquiries regarding certificates and updates supervisor on information.
  • Completes and processes routine releases of information request from patients, patient representatives, insurance representatives, legal requests, physicians, hospitals, city, state and Federal health agencies.
